About Walnut Hill

About Me

My name is Angie King and I am pleased to be leading Walnut Hill Nature Enrichment.  I was born in Panama City, FL but was raised throughout the United States. I’m married to Kevin King who is retired from the Air Force and currently teaches in CMCSS. We have 7 children, aged from 7 to 24. Tennessee has been our home for the last 13 years and Coopertown, specifically, for the last 10.

I have a Master’s of Reading in Education, a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education, and 16 years of teaching experience.

A tremendous love for the outdoors and animals was instilled into me from an early age. I’ve always had animals, of all kinds, and spent most my time outdoors in nature - whether it be walking the beach, swimming in the ocean, hiking through the woods, or wading in creeks. To this day, I still love bugs, to be barefoot in the grass, and to play in the rain.

When my last two children were born 6 years ago, a desire to provide a different educational life began to take root in my heart. Although everything in my life pointed to a traditional educational route, I just felt they needed more. I was more than scared to begin a homeschool journey, but also knew the four walls of a school building were not going to be enough. Walnut Hill came to fruition from that desire and passion and I now want to share it with others.

I believe that children are built to move, and play, and take risks. Full engagement in activities allows children to develop an understanding of themselves and the world around them. Children, when playing outdoors, will naturally encompass many important skills, such as fine and gross motor skills, social-emotional skills, literacy, and STEM. In addition, when children engage in adventurous play they will intentionally engage in moderate amounts of fear as they swing, slide, climb and jump, which in turns allows the child to self assess risk, learn healthy boundaries, and discover autonomy. Free play helps children discover what they love, what their talents are, and what interests them.

My greatest hope through Walnut Hill is to share my love, knowledge, and appreciation for learning, nature, and the outdoors with your children where they can feel excited, safe, and free to grow.
